New and updated initiatives offer employers, unions, and benefit plans tools to improve compliance with labor laws and protect workers
The U.S. Department of Labor has recently released a series of voluntary self-audit programs directed at assisting employers, unions, and benefit plan administrators in identifying and correcting potential violations of federal labor laws. These initiatives plan to support compliance while reducing the need for formal investigations.
“Self-audits are one of the most effective ways to build a culture of compliance and trust,” said Deputy Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling. “These programs are designed to give employers, unions, and benefit plan officials the tools they need to correct potential violations proactively. By empowering the regulated community with clarity and collaboration, we are continuing to fulfill the Department of Labor’s mission to put both workers and employers first.”
The programs span multiple agencies within the department, each offering targeted tools and incentives to support legal and ethical operations.
Key offerings include the Employee Benefits Security Administration’s correction and reporting programs, the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s online compliance resource center, and OSHA’s expanded Voluntary Protection and On-Site Consultation programs. Additional efforts include the Office of Labor-Management Standards’ partnership program for unions, the VETS “SALUTE” initiative supporting veteran employment protections, and the Wage and Hour Division’s revived Payroll Audit Independent Determination program.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- That employers, unions, and benefit plan administrators would act with honesty and care as they engage in these voluntary programs.
- For Deputy Secretary Sonderling and the leaders of the Department of Labor, including those heading OSHA, MSHA, EBSA, OLMS, VETS, and the Wage and Hour Division, would serve with clear purpose and a sincere commitment to protecting both workers and lawful business operations.
- That the Department of Labor’s efforts to expand voluntary compliance will cultivate a culture of accountability and respect, where workplaces are safer, fairer, and more responsive to the needs of both workers and employers
